The Skylight Cabin’s signature feature is exactly what it sounds like: a motorized retractable panel set directly into the roof above the bed, opening onto a section of reinforced, insulated glass that in turn slides back to open air on clear, bug-light nights. It’s slow and deliberately quiet (it takes about ninety seconds to fully retract) so it never feels like machinery running over your head.

We built it with a full blackout curtain backup mounted just below the glass for the mornings you’d rather sleep in than watch the sunrise, and a wood stove for the shoulder-season nights when the roof is open but the cabin still needs heat. It sits back in the forest canopy rather than facing the bay, so the view through the panel is framed by branches rather than open horizon — guests who’ve stayed in both this and the Observatory Room tend to describe this one as the more intimate, cabin-in-the-woods version of the same idea.
